Support Your Local Shelter!

Hi All,

Our friend Brian asked his friends if we would do a reminder post today about the importance of supporting your local shelter.  All of my kitties have been adopted from one kind of shelter or another, except for Casper who was born under a friend's porch.  I just can't begin to imagine what would have happened to Ben or Archie who were found on the street as kittens, or Molly who was just thrown away in a box with her babies, or Jimmy who was taken from an unsuitable home if there weren't rescues to look after them until they were adopted!  Every time I go to my local shelter they are brimming with beautiful cats who deserve loving homes and although they do a great job they are usually stretched pretty thin budget-wise!

We can't always give money to shelters, but there are other ways to help.  Usually your local shelter will have a website and on that website there will be a "Wish List"  The Wish list can have anything on it from incubators to food.  I knit cat blankets for my local shelter.  The kitties don't mind that my knitting is awful and not fancy because the blankets are warm and cozy when they are living in a metal cage.

I look at my boys so happy and safe in my home and it really breaks my heart to think of animals out there who are not as fortunate.  I know that we are all animal lovers here in our blogging community and we do what we can, but let's spread the word around and try to get others involved to do a little something extra to help out our furry friends in need!

We are happy cats

We have a safe home

Our wish is for all kitties to find a caring shelter while they wait for their perfect servant to come along.

We support our local shelter--our Benny is adopted from the shelter. Each year, we donate boxes of items for their annual Christmas craft fair. And our person Rene makes nice fleece cat blankets for their cages.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! Shelters everywhere are in need of support- by volunteering time, money, or donating supplies. And most of all by adopting a companion who desperately needs a home.
Also supporting the spay/neuter organizations will eventually take some of the stress off the over-full shelters.
The little furry ones do not deserve to suffer the hard life of the unwanted!

We are always grateful for shelters! Almost Home Foundation meant the difference between life or death for Trixie. Mama's two other dogs, who passed away before we were born, were also rescued from shelters. Thank you to all shelters for the animals you save!

Thanks for reminding me. I was so upset over none of my teams winning their play-off games. This plum slipped my mind.

I'm a rescue kitty too - who is happy to have a good home.

Five of us are rescues here at the cottage. We can't imagine our lives without each other and LP.LP likes to have gently used towel and blanket drives amongst her friends which are then given to shelters.
Jimmy is looking beautiful Cat!

You are right cat - it isn't about one person doing one big thing - it is about all us being willing to do one small thing. Which adds up to huge change!! And we love that you knit blankets....

Wonderful post! Shelters do need as much help as we can give them. Out entire blog is focused on the cats at the shelter at which we volunteer (PAWS), so we did not do a "special" post today. But we are definitely with you in mind and spirit, and we appreciate your awesome message. Have a great day, dear friends! :)

How wonderful it is for all the kitties that are living in homes like yours. I wish for the day when there are enough homes for them ALL.

Great post and very important. The shelters here are always full of kitties and dogs and other animals needing homes. There are many ways to help them and we know they appreciate anything you can do. Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

It scares me to think "if I did not meet my boys..." They may be still on a street. And I am happy that I could meet and take them home. At the same time I feel sad to think about homeless animals. Shelters and people who support animals are very important and I want to do as much as I can to help them. This is a great post and your kitties are very happy to have such a wonderful home and family.

Great post! We posted about the shelters having wish lists too!! You'd be surprised some of the things they can use!!

Checking out the shelters' wish lists is a great idea, and one all humans should do periodically!

One idea is to offer free neutering, and to charge owners of non-neutered cats a yearly tax as "breeders".

Adopting form shelters and neutering is a must. Au, Target and Boris are ex-strays and retired gentlemen cats too.

Yes, it's sad so many are homeless or in bad homes.
