Friday - Update on the Boys

Hello friends, I wanted to thank everyone for their overwhelming good wishes for Kip and Jimmy on Wednesday and for the many suggestions and remedies to help them recover from their colds.

I purchased some Viralys lysine palatable gel (hah) from my vet and have been dosing everyone with that.  I also purchased Lysine capsules that I can break open and sprinkle on their food which might be easier for maintenance since they are not keen to eat the gel.

Here is an update on the everyone:

Kip is very much improved, his eyes are no longer running and I only heard a couple of sneezes today, he is frisky again and very engaged.

Jimmy is in the thick of it, his eyes are not running but his nose is and he sneezes frequently, he seems sad and not himself.  He is still eating and drinking so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Archie and Casper seem fine, fingers crossed they will remain that way.

Ben was fine too but tonight before bed I heard him sneeze.  I'm really praying it was actually Jimmy doing a little ventriloquism because he was also in the room, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I was very touched that so many of you left kind get well comments for the Boys, it is truly wonderful to be part of such a supportive network of people :-)

Thank you again,
Cat
xx

  1. We do hope it was just ventriloquism :-) Jimmy, we hope you are feeling a lot better soon, and Ben, Archie and Casper will all be fine. Any idea how the virus came into the "family" in the first place?

  3. Glad to hear the boys are doing better.
Hopefully the lysine will keep the sneezles away.
Here is a link to the sprinkle type of lysine that my cats adore... it's cheaper than buying it at the vet, too:

    Hope this helps.
And the gang is still sending purrs and purrayers for a complete recovery.

  5. Glad to hear Kip is feeling better, and Jimmy is eating and drinking, and Ben didn't really sneeze (no-no). We continue to send healing purrs to them and stay well purrs to everybody else. Purrs.

I've gotten l-lysine tablets from the health food store, used a pill crusher, and mixed the resulting powder into food or with water in an oral syringe (to make sure it got in the right mouth). My Jet used to get a runny eye; this worked really well for him.

  8. We're glad Kip is better and hope the Lysine helps. Didn't know you could get it in gel from the vet. Bet it's cheaper to buy capsules--or even the Vetri-Science treats. :-)

As long as everyone's eating and drinking and doing their business normally, it's all good. :-)

    Continued purrs!

  27. sounds like the L-lysine nutritional supplement oral gel is starting to work :)

one thing I learned from fostering kitties with URI for TCR, if Jimmy gets really stuffed up, an inexpensive remedy is to sit with him in a hot steamy bathroom to clear his congestion.

sending more purrs for your kitties :)

  33. If Jimmy is still eating and drinking, things aren't so bad, I think. He is probably just feeling as we all do with a cold, miserable and out of sorts. Nonetheless, it's not a pleasant thing for a cat to go through, nor for an owner to watch. Good luck to Jimmy and all his roommates.

  34. Yikes - we missed it. Colds can be common. Our foster monsters (the little ones anyhow) seem to have it. Honestly, I have seen mixed results with the lysine. Ivy hasn't been tested but we suspect she carries the feline herpes virus...which means she gets the snots more often than others. It has been recommended to use lysine - and she hates it. I would rather deal with occasional snot than a regularly ticked off Ivy. :) Purrs that the snot leaves quickly.

  35. Oh my - maybe it's the hot weather? We are now going through the same (we have 6 kitties - one is very old and diabetic - seems he has caught it too). I hope you all get better soon!

  36. OOOooooohhh! We know we're late, but we still want you to know we are thinking of you and hope you guys all feel better and better. All us, kitties and Mumsy, have not had a cold, but we sure been having a time with allergies. It is so unhappy when a kitty sick.

Hugs and love to all you guys.
