Real Mancats Decorate

You may not know it, but Casper is an interior decorator.  Indeed, he has a penchant for minimalist surroundings and clean surfaces.  I know this because every time I put something on a coffee table, bedside table, sideboard, console or occasional table it ends up on the floor.  I was laughing the other day when Jan from The Cat’s Meow, who recently celebrated a birthday, said Milo loves to knock down her cards because the exact same thing happens here.  I have long given up trying to cluster my Christmas cards on the sideboard in the dining room, I now attach them to grosgrain ribbons and hang them in long strands around the window frames (a little clear tape here and there prevents the strands from moving around tantalizingly).  I have boxes full of treasures that I have collected on my travels or that have been gifts which have enormous sentimental value to me, but none are displayed after many items ended up in pieces on the floor.  I still have them but if you look closely you can see that they have been skilfully pieced back together.  I consider myself somewhat of an expert with glue as a result of Casper’s decorating efforts. For a while our tallboys were an ornament oasis, but he eventually found those too; by jumping from a bedside table to the top of the door then down onto the dresser.  The only way to display something at my house is to nail it to the wall so I hang lots of paintings and ceramics.  I was thinking about asking Robert to install some shelves at a "beyond-cat" level, but then they would be so high I couldn't see what's up there either!

Be gone devil knick-knack!

  1. Binga is our decorator/ knickknack breaker. My human has a few special things on a shelf that (whispering) Binga does not know about so that they are safe from her rearranging skills.

BTW, do you think you can spread the word about the special needs cat I've featured today on my blog? He's in your area, and he will need a very special home, so I'm trying to get him out there in as many ways as possible! Thanks.

  2. Of course cats are decorators. One roll of toilet paper, one paw of claws, and you have an Installation Artist At Work.

  3. LOL! He looks sooo elegant sitting there in his nice sparely decorated area. Maybe because HE's the main attraction. Who needs knick-knacks when they could have a lovely living sculpture? A Work of Art!!!
    Way to go, Casper!

  8. Our Al does the same thing - Mom just stopped putting breakables out where he can get them! The other cats run from all the crashes and noise when things fall.

  10. We've been known to help redecorate too, especially Nicki. Though he seems to prefer taking things OUT of their storage spots!

  12. Oh, Casper! You're a mancat after Domino's heart. She likes to knock things over too.

A thought just occurred to me. PURRhaps if you had some shelves with knickknacks intended for the kitties, it would be a diversion. Of course, you'd have to change it up now and then to keep it interesting.

Maybe you need a plate rail that goes around the room, closer to the ceiling for all your
    chatkes!

  13. Casper is pretty handsome! Mom has shelves on the wall and a big bookshelf that has books on the bottom shelves and the top shelf for her decorations. The kittens knock the books off sometimes, but moms stuff is safe from everyone.

  14. I agree with Artemisia (AFSocksScylla). Casper also captured my heart with his every move there since I, too, is a minimalist decorator. I do hate it when our house begins to get messy becaus of my brother and sister leaving most of their stuff around and not cleaning up. It is me who always ends up cleaning their things and putting everything aside and in proper places.

Btw, have you ever checked out http://www.floppycats.com/? My kitties and I visit it regularly - they review cat products, talk about cat health issues and introduce you to new cat products. Or you might want to join the discussion in the comments section of a lot of the posts - I've learned a lot there! :-)

  17. Mr. Casper, I like your style! I also love to knock things off of tables or shelves. My mom always says "Zoe, stop being bad", but I just look at her and knock the next thing off.

  18. Hey Casper - its good you have a profession - I hear a decorater make lots of green papers.

Pellie is a clutter bug type person - so I have has to learn to step lightly around all her stuff.

  19. Sammy-Joe is a very critical interior decorator himself! He loves to walk on tables and shelves and, if he doesn't like what he sees, he will give it a swift kick with his paw! :)

  20. Casper, what a good decorator you are. I can see what a good job you are doing. All that stuff belongs on the floor, not on the tables. We are extremely proud of you. Take care and have a great week.

  22. You have just captured in writing the households of all of us cat people. The piano used to have various beauties sitting on it, but no more. Then we tried picture frames - less tempting - NOT. There are just bare places in the house that would look oh so much better with "stuff". I have a 3-shelf hanging on the wall by the kitchen table. You can't get to it from anywhere. Except that Magic took a running leap from the table and slammed into it. There was nothing to grab onto. He just slammed into it and dropped to the ground, raking a precious creamer that belonged to an antique set to floor. I learned my lesson :-)

  27. I am very good wif leaving Mommy's things untouched. But Bronzy... oh, my... she too is a minimalist and has broken half the house decorations. Over the last 2 years, Bronzy has trained Mommy to be a minimalist too. Mommy says this helps her to save some money on decor.
